Sunrise at Rattlesnake Ledge

As far as hikes in Washington go, Rattlesnake Ledge is easily a fan-favorite, which is why I typically avoid it at all costs. Everyone knows it, everyone has hiked it; out-of-towners flock there. It makes sense, of course.

Looking for something close to the city? Go to Rattlesnake.

Want fantastic views for someone minimal effort? Go to Rattlesnake.

Have a friend visiting from out of town? Go to Rattlesnake.

Want to be around 8,000 people? go to Rattlesnake.

While Rattlesnake is a lovely hike, it is also very busy, so be prepared to pass by a ton of people and dogs, and to also share the ledge with others.

With so many hikes in Washington, it’s not my preferred place to go, but it's close to Seattle (which is close to my bed), and when it comes to sunrise hikes, the distance between duvet and mountaintop is really all I am concerned about.

the journey

We ambitiously set out to chase the sunrise, but of course we over slept and ended up having to power walk up the mountain, yet by some small miracle, we impressively made it up in 35 minutes. Although it was tough getting out of bed, especially after entering it only 3 hours previously, I must admit it was worth it.

Luckily, it was quite as crowded because, unlike myself apparently, the more sensible folks remain asleep during the wee hours of the morning. All in all, it was a gorgeous day. And to celebrate our early morning efforts, a ginormous cinnamon roll requiring a steak knife to cut it.
